For more than 20 years, America has been waiting for the second coming of ?The Brethren,? the gossipy, trash-talking classic about the Supreme Court by Bob Woodward and Scott Armstrong, which painted most justices as crusading, senile, back-stabbing narcissists. Thankfully, we will have to wait a little longer. With his memoir, ?Five Chiefs,? former Associate Justice John Paul Stevens shows that the court is different from the political branches principally because the justices respect the institution too much to publicly flog one another. There?s a reason the court?s popularity rating is so much higher than that of the other two branches: The justices know better than to dish for fame and influence.
