Joel Achenbach: Spaceship Earth: The first photos

In the course of writing today?s story on Spaceship Earth I searched for the first photograph of the Earth from space. It hinges on your definition. There were photos of the surface from V-2 rockets back in the 1940s, but they were only about 65 miles up and from that altitude you can?t see the whole planet. The real issue is, when did we first see the entire planet, or at least the portion of the disk in sunlight, in a single photographic frame?
