About this blog: Was Egypt?s winter revolution a theatrical performance on the stage of Tahrir Square? In some respects, it was, says Jeffrey C. Alexander in his new book ?Performative Revolution in Egypt,? published last month by Bloomsbury. Alexander, a professor of sociology at Yale and author of ?The Performance of Politics: Obama?s Victory and the Democratic Struggle for Power,? examines the revolution and argues that in the square the protesters created a microcosm of the democacy they hoped to bring to Egypt. It was this political drama, Alexander says, that ultimately swayed the army and ushered in radical change at the top. Mixed into the drama was the power of communications in the Internet age, with many dubbing the Egyptian revolt a Facebook revolution. Here, Alexander assesses the impact of social networks on the outcome in Egypt and the role of the Internet in future potential uprisings.
