Muslim Brotherhood says leads Egypt's vote count

photoCAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood's party said on Wednesday its alliance was leading in Egypt's election, which would give the nation's oldest Islamist group a powerful parliamentary platform to challenge the authority of ruling army generals. State television said first-round results in Egypt's first free election since army officers ousted the king in 1952 would be issued on Thursday, a day later than scheduled because of a high turnout in the largely peaceful poll. ...

Why African Americans aren?t embracing Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wall Street might seem like a movement that would resonate with black Americans. After all, unemployment among African Americans is at 15 percent, vs. almost 8 percent for whites. And between 2005 and 2009, black households lost just over half of their median net worth compared with white families, who lost 16 percent, according to the Pew Research Center.

Defense, prosecution agree Ehrlich campaign manager approved robo-calls

State prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed on one key revelation Tuesday in the opening statements of a trial to determine whether robo-calls made during Maryland?s gubernatorial election last year were intended to suppress black voter turnout.

Paul E. Schurick, former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.?s (R) campaign manager, approved the calls, which were placed to homes of tens of thousands of African American Democrats in Prince George?s County and Baltimore while the polls were still open on Election Day.

Editorial: Will Egypt?s generals respect the power of the vote?

EGYPT?S FIRST PARLIAMENTARY election since last winter?s revolution has gotten off to a promising start. Despite 10 days of turmoil in Cairo?s Tahrir Square, long and peaceful lines of voters appeared Monday and Tuesday in the capital and six other provinces ? the first places to vote in a complex electoral process that will stretch across two dozen days between now and March. There were few reports of violence, and initial estimates suggested that turnout would far exceed that of the previous, rigged elections during the 30-year rule of Hosni Mubarak.

Where to go dancing in Fairfax County?

We often hear from readers asking for a place to go dancing in Northern Virginia. Some wish for a space in Fairfax County but instead find themselves driving into Washington or Clarendon.

Why is that? Some of the answers can be found in a story in today?s Metro section about Fast Eddie?s. According to a 1975 ordinance, a dance floor at a licensed restaurant in Fairfax County can?t be bigger than one-eighth the size of the dining room. At most restaurants and bars, that doesn?t leave very much space for getting your groove on.

Afghan officials voice scant remorse to Pakistan

KABUL ? The Afghan police general watched on television as Pakistani soldiers solemnly saluted the coffins of 24 of their comrades who were killed in a U.S. military airstrike Saturday.

The general stood up in disgust. ?That?s the best thing America has done in 10 years here,? he said.

While U.S. officials from the war zone to the White House offered contrite condolences to the families of the dead and scrambled to repair the tattered relationship with Pakistan, Afghan officials have taken a tougher line. Frustrated by a Taliban insurgency they are convinced is supervised by and based in Pakistan, they have expressed little remorse, even accusing Pakistan of exaggerating the gravity of the situation to deflect attention from its own meddling in Afghanistan.

Nightlife Agenda: Avey Tare and vintage cocktails

Every Tuesday, the Going Out Gurus highlight the week?s best DJs, bands, dance nights and parties.

This week?s Top 5 Events:

Wednesday: When Animal Collective performed at Merriweather Post Pavilion in July, it was a happy homecoming for the Baltimore-bred psychedelic band that became overground stars thanks to the vibrant, joyous songs on its 2009 album named after the Maryland amphitheater. There couldn?t have been a more appropriate venue for the celebratory show. When Animal Collective?s Avey Tare performs at U Street Music Hall on Wednesday, it will also be an appropriate venue. His 2010 solo album is a dark and murky affair, featuring Animal Collective?s usual array of shape-shifting sounds but with songs that are less expansive, more introspective and still plenty trippy. It should be a good match for the subterranean confines of U Hall.

Seeking counsel from a wise man of the Arab world

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia

Spring is a distant memory now, including here in the Arab world. It?s harvest time, and people give thanks for what they?ve reaped in the hope that it will carry them through the long and chilly months ahead.

I think of these seasonal facts of life as I watch the television reports of chaos in the streets of Egypt and Syria, as revolutions struggle to be born. In this part of the world, the feast celebration is the Muslim religious holiday known as the Eid al-Adha, which came a few weeks ago, but the spirit lingers this Thanksgiving weekend.

What the Union Leader means for Newt Gingrich (and what it doesn?t)

The endorsement by the New Hampshire Union Leader of the presidential candidacy of Newt Gingrich provides the former House speaker with a boost in the Granite State and likely solidifies him as the conservative alternative to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

?The endorsement gives Newt credibility with New Hampshire voters, and conservatives especially, just when he needs it most,? said Mike Dennehy, who managed the New Hampshire presidential campaigns for Arizona Sen. John McCain in 2000 and 2008. ?As with McCain in ?08, the [Union Leader] has brought to life the comeback for Newt Gingrich.?

Five myths about Newt Gingrich

1.Gingrich is an academic.

He earned a PhD in history and taught college before winning a seat in Congress. He has often spoken of himself as a historian. In 1995, he told CNN?s Bob Franken: ?I am the most seriously professorial politician since Woodrow Wilson.?

But whereas Wilson spent years publishing scholarly works, Gingrich was more like the professor who wins popularity awards from undergraduates but doesn?t get tenure because he doesn?t publish anything significant. He even told a college newspaper in 1977 that ?I made the decision two or three years ago that I?d rather run for Congress than publish the papers or academic books necessary to get promoted.?

As White House candidates abandon public funding, Republicans look to end system

At some point in 2012, President Obama and his GOP opponent will formally declare whether they plan to take public funding for their general-election campaigns. If House Republicans get their way, there won?t be a choice to make.

This week, the House will vote on a bill sponsored by Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) that would abolish the Presidential Election Campaign Fund and the Presidential Primary Matching Payment Account. Any money left over in those funds would be sent to the U.S. Treasury to help chip away at the deficit.
