Peeps Show VI: Power to the Peeps

After six years, our annual Peeps Diorama contest has become a survey of all that touches and taunts our collective consciousness, an anthology of absurd, artistic triumphs displayed through malleable marshmallow rabbits and chicks.

Syria's Aleppo running low on food amid siege

Food and cooking gas were in short supply and power cuts plunged homes into darkness as soldiers and rebels battled Tuesday to tip the scales in the fight for Aleppo, Syria's largest city and the current focus of its civil war.

Dave Barry?s Year in Review: The 2011 Festival of Sleaze

It was the kind of year that made a person look back fondly on the gulf oil spill.

Granted, the oil spill was bad. But it did not result in a high-decibel, weeks-long national conversation about a bulge in a congressman?s underpants. Which is exactly what we had in the Festival of Sleaze that was 2011. Remember? There were days when you could not escape The Bulge. At dinnertime, parents of young children had to be constantly ready to hurl themselves in front of their TV screens, for fear that it would suddenly appear on the news in high definition. For a brief (Har!) period, The Bulge was more famous than Justin Bieber.

Love, etc.: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson; Bret Michaels

? Moving on: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, the Liz and Dick of the Vampire set. Romney tour ?12 ? gaffepalooza

How is Mitt Romney?s summer vacation going? Fine, except for frequent pauses to remove foot from mouth.

He began his ?Look At Me, I?m a Statesman? overseas tour by offending the people of the United Kingdom. To put it mildly, Romney is no genius at reading the mood of an audience. But even he realized things were not going well when he saw tabloid headlines such as ?Mitt the Twit? and ?Nowhere Man.?

Drought disaster: Share your story

Corn plants struggle to survive on drought-stricken land of farmer Scott Keach who owns 2500 acre Keach Farm in HendersonWhile the current drought may feel less dramatic than, say, a Colorado wildfire or Florida hurricane, it is indeed affecting millions of Americans: the farmer with dried-up crops, the rancher whose land swelters in the summer sun, the suburban family under watering restrictions or the urban couple [...]

?Snow-Storm in August? by Jefferson Morley

In popular American history, the decades between the founding era and the Civil War are a sort of no-man?s land, largely glossed over if not ignored entirely. There are, of course, exceptions. Daniel Walker Howe explored the richness of the period in ?What Hath God Wrought? and won the Pulitzer Prize for his trouble. Andrew Jackson commands a new volume with some regularity. Mostly, though, the era is treated as a dreary interregnum between those plucky patriots with powdered hair and the appalling carnage of the war over slavery.

The Death Valley ultramarathon

Late at night and high on the mountain, all that seemed to exist for Brenda Carawan was throbbing pain ? in each muscle, in every joint. She had to muster everything inside to simply move one foot in front of the other.

Tireless tracker rewrote the book on dinosaurs in Maryland

With the coiled energy of a stalking cat, Ray Stanford splashes outof the stream and onto a rocky sandbar, his knee-high, hunter-green boots leaving shallow heel prints that fill with water and begin to melt. Crouched, Stanford scans, head down, wavy silver hair dappled in the sunshine. Birds tweet. Water rustles. It?s 3:30 p.m.; the sun is at mid-angle, throwing good shadows. Stanford picks up a flat slice of pale yellow rock, a rough triangle the size of his hand. He rubs it with his thumb, tilts it this way and that.
