Stephen Colbert on the filibuster and mashed potatoes (VIDEO)

As Democrats push for filibuster reform in the Senate, Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert weighed in on the matter during his program Wednesday night.

And given how little Congress works, some of that has to be Mitch McConnell stopping by Harry Reid's family dinners to block passage of the mashed potatoes."

Catholic Church sticking to the high moral ground

E.J. Dionne Jr. [?An example for the bishops,? op-ed, Nov. 26] was correct in holding up the example of the Catholic Church?s rich heritage in aiding those in need. The church was at the forefront of the university movement and has been at the fore in medical care and orphanages, etc. For example, about one-sixth of all hospital admissions each year in the United States are to Catholic hospitals.

Greg Sargent: Boehner: No tax cuts for middle class without tax cuts for top two percent

As you know, GOP Rep. Tom Cole made waves today by urging Republicans to give in to the Dem demand that they extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone under $250,000. Cole argued this would remove the leverage Dems have and give the GOP more leverage to fight to extend the high-end tax cuts later, since Dems want the fiscal cliff averted and also want a debt ceiling hike.

In other news: Jill Kelley loses honorary consul title

Jill Kelley, the Tampa socialite caught up in the David Petraeus scandal, is losing her ?honorary consul? title from South Korea because she used it for personal gain, reports the Associated Press. During the Republican National Convention, Kelley touted her connection with Petraeus and wanted a 2 percent commission for a no-bid coal deal with South Korea, said Adam Victor, president of TransGas Development Systems. Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kyou-hyun weighed in Monday: ?It?s not suitable to the status of honorary consul that [she] sought to be involved in commercial projects and peddle influence.? Kelley received the ceremonial honor ? a goodwill ambassador with no official privileges ? in August and really got into it: She had license plates with the title on her Mercedes and asked police for ?diplomatic protection? when reporters surrounded her house early this month.

Female military members sue to serve in combat

Plaintiff Colleen Farrell, a U.S. Marine Corps First Lieutenant, speaks during a media conference Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, in San Francisco. Several active women military personnel have filed a federal lawsuit to demand combat action, requesting all branches of the military to remove the so-called combat exclusionary rule that bars women from fighting on the front lines. This suit, to be filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, is believed to be the first involving active duty military personnel. (AP Photo/Ben Margot)Four female service members filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging the Pentagon's ban on women serving in combat, hoping the move will add pressure to drop the policy just as officials are gauging the effect that lifting the prohibition will have on morale.
