Recalling the heydays of D.C. trolleys

The Jan. 27 Metro article about the last day of D.C. streetcars 50 years ago [?Clang! went the trolley?] mentioned the theory about a General Motors conspiracy to convert streetcar systems into bus lines. The theoryis questionable, but that?s another story. More interesting is the tale peculiar to Washington?s Capital Transit company.

MEMOIR

MY DYSLEXIA

By Philip Schultz Norton. 120 pp. $21.95

?

It would probably come as a major shock for any middle-aged adult to find out that he has a learning disorder. But what if that man was a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, and the disorder was dyslexia, which fundamentally affects one?s ability to process language? That is precisely what happened to Philip Schultz, a writer whose self-worth and self-understanding were rocked by the relatively late-in-life discovery.

Editorial Board: Ensuring teen offenders can?t be rehabilitated

PRESERVATION OF public safety is among the most important duties of a governor. But two measures being championed by Virginia Gov. Robert F. ?Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Cooperation,? by Richard Sennett

Sociologist Richard Sennett begins his new book by describing a day at his young grandson?s school in London when kids commandeered the public address system to blast song lyrics rife with the F-word. ?We hate what you do, and we hate your whole crew!? singer Lily Allen wailed over the loudspeakers. A 6-year-old girl punctuated the ensuing chaos by grinding her non-existent hips to the music, which never helps when school officials are already hyperventilating.

Yes, you can be black and blue-collar, but the media gets it wrong

For all of his working life, my dad wore a shirt with his name on the pocket. His mom died when he was a boy, and he completed only eighth grade before he had to drop out to make his own way. He could fix anything and figure out everything, though, including how to make a living and raise a big family. The jobs included running a convent laundry and the boiler room of a high school ? which put him squarely in the great tradition of the working-class, blue-collar American worker proudly scrapping his way into the middle class.

The president plays small ball

Once upon a time, small ball was not Barack Obama?s game. Tuesday, it was the essence of his State of the Union address. The visionary of 2008 ? purveyor of hope and change, healer of the earth, tamer of the rising seas ? offered an hour of little things: tax-code tweaks to encourage this or that kind of behavior (manufacturing being the flavor of the day), little watchdog agencies to round up Wall Street miscreants and Chinese DVD pirates, even a presidential demand ?that all students stay in high school until they graduate or turn 18.? Under penalty of what? Jail? The self-proclaimed transformer of America is now playing truant officer?
