Regarding the April 24 Style article ?A novel kind of generosity?:
For World Book Night, an event at which free books were handed out to people around the District, I accompanied a friend who volunteered to distribute Ann Patchett?s ?Bel Canto.? We found that older adults were more responsive to getting a free book. We received a wide variety of responses from those who turned down our offer, from ?I haven?t read a book since sixth grade? to ?I?ll wait for the movie.?
