The roots of American disunity

About this blog: Americans fight such nasty political battles that it makes one wonder how a people of common beliefs can plunge to such depths. Colin Woodard may have the answer. As he shows in his new book, ?American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America,? published last month by Viking, we never really were a people of common beliefs but rather always a disparate group representing dissimilar cultures. As a result, inhabitants of different regions will have sharply different views of American values. Hence, battlelines are drawn. Here, Woodard explains that it is important to understand the origins of our differences.
