Jonathan Yardley?s review of Susan Orlean?s ?Rin Tin Tin: The Life and Legend? struck me as unfair [?From battlefield to canine stardom,? Outlook, Oct. 9].
It?s one thing to say that an author failed at the task she set for herself, quite another to criticize her for not writing another kind of book. What Yardley disliked about the book is what I loved. As a historian who also wrote about Rin Tin Tin, I was fascinated to see how Orlean reacted to the same documents I used. I would have been fascinated to learn about her reactions even if I had not written about the same subject.
